Meehan Statement on House Food Stamp Bill

Statement

Date: Sept. 19, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 3102, the Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity Act:

"Many families throughout the 7th District rely on SNAP as an important safety net. There is no doubt that reforms are necessary to ensure SNAP dollars are used wisely and appropriately, though I'm concerned that this legislation would have hurt the very people who need assistance the most," Meehan said.

With passage of this bill, Democrat and Republican negotiators from the House and Senate will meet in conference committee to hammer out a compromise Farm Bill that will incorporate both food stamps and federal agriculture programs.

"I urge my House and Senate colleagues to improve this bill in conference so we can root out unwise spending, make sure adults who can work are working, and ensure that the benefits are focused on families who are truly in need."
